Mountain bike trail tip

Although most of these trails are in good shape you’ll want to check the radar before getting on your bike. The rainy weather can flood some of these low elevation trails and the dry weather can make steering difficult in the sugar sand.

Helmets are required at most of these trails. Here is the one I use.  Some riders do prefer to wear full face helmets.

If you’re ready to ride here’s a few  Mountain Bike Trails in Florida you should check out:

This Mountain Bike trail in Florida starts with a narrow warmup trail through the woods that leads to a gated area. Enter the trailhead here and follow the signs for the one way trails. There are plenty of drops, twists, and banked turns. Several rocky and rooty sections make for a bumpy ride.

The scenery is filled with palmetto palms and scrub natural areas. There isn’t too much shade, so don’t forget your sun protection.

Here’s the sunscreen I use. This is one of the few brands that doesn’t stain clothes orange when mixed with sweat.

This park has different well marked skills lines for everyone. When riding you will one shady area with a table to take a break from the relentless Florida sunshine.

I recommend wearing sunglasses to protect your eyes from the sun, branches, and rocks. Here is a pair of low cost polarized sunglasses that I wear while riding.

Throughout the park you will enjoy the scenery of ponds, lakes and the Loxahatchee River.

Okeeheelee Park South Trail

I thought that I had ridden a few miles on the Pinehurst Mountain Bike Trail only to realize that I hadn’t even made it to the actual mountain bike trail. The course I rode was a trail adjacent to the Pinehurst Mountain Bike Trail and is called Okeheelee Park South. I spoke to someone who lived next to Okeheelee Park for 15 years and they had never heard of a mountain bike trail near this location.

There are three parks in this general location.

Okheelee Park North
Okeheelee Park South
Freedom Park

Okeeheelee Park North features a nice paved trail that weaves through the entire park.

Across the street is Okeheelee Park South and this 3.2 mile gravel trail is shared by walkers and riders. This trail features twists, turns, and straight sections. The scenery is scattered with ponds and lakes. This trail does not have any advanced features except for some loose sugar sand.  Coming up on one turn I saw an Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake. Be careful!

After returning home I found one description of the actual Pinehurst Mountain Bike Trail Entrance.

I had such a good workout at Okeeheelee Park South that I used this trail as a warmup the next time I made it to Pinehurst Mountain Bike Trail.

 Pinehurst Mountain Bike Trail

To get to this trail you will need to go to Greenacres Freedom Park. Park near the playground in this park. Ride through the southwest side of the soccer field through a path in the grass. After making it around the soccer field you will see the trail entrance which is a tunnel in the bushes. There are also additional entrances off of Pinehurst Road.

If you can ride at high speeds on this trail, then you can probably ride quickly anywhere. Bumps, roots, twists, turns, branches, bushes, and logs try to slow you down on this course. There are beginner, intermediate and advanced trails for all levels of riders.

I don’t recommend riding the black trails unless you are expert level. Could you make it down this staircase?

If you’re looking for the easiest rides I recommend the paved trails of Quiet Waters and Jonathan Dickinson State Park or Okeeheelee North. The gravel trails of Okeeheelee South also provided a bit of entertainment.
